ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Israeli forces advanced into an area in southern Syria on Saturday and carried out fortification work on a strategic hill in Quneitra province, Syrian state media reported, in the latest reported incursion near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
State-run SANA said Israeli forces moved into Tal al-Ahmar al-Sharqi in southern Quneitra countryside during the afternoon. Two bulldozers were reportedly used to build defensive positions and raise earthen barriers on top of the hill, before seven military vehicles arrived as reinforcements. Prefabricated structures had also been brought to the site earlier, according to the report.
The hill overlooks parts of southern Syria and areas adjacent to the occupied Golan Heights, making it strategically significant. Images published earlier this month by Turkish state-run Anadolu Agency showed an Israeli flag raised at a newly built military position in the Tal al-Ahmar area.
